This may seems like an out of date problem, but those of you who do tech support and repair computers regularly know Windows XP is still in use on a very large number of machines.

There is a very annoying update error that seems to come up more than I would like to see ... Error number: 0x80244019. It's related to installing updates on a Windows XP machine. I have a fairly simple solution below:

1. First, try to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)
DOWNLOAD LINK

2. Reboot Machine - Try Updates again.

If that does not work, do the following:

1. Download Windows Update Agent
DOWNLOAD LINK

2. Save the .exe file to your C: drive

3. Click Start, and then click Run.

4. Type "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce"  then click OK

5. Install Windows Update agent.

6. Restart the PC and try Windows Updates again. (Should work now!)

I hope that is helpful to anyone getting this annoying error.

You my friend are a ROCKSTAR!! Thank you for sharing this!!! Even Microsoft themselves did not have this solution posted or one that worked for that matter!!! The Update Agent was all I needed! Already frustrated as all heck that my PC crashed and I had to rebuild it with a new drive so this little anoying sucker was the icing on the cake..... thank goodness someone knows what they are talking about on the web "too bad I tried 20 others before I found yours" ;) Many HUGE thanks again!

You are the man !! Been on the phone with the "experts" at Microsoft for 3 hours over the last 2 days. They wanted me to do everything short of putting a customers computer in the dishwasher. NO HELP at all. Followed your instructions and was dnloading updates in 5 minutes.....

Great! Windows Update Agent install did the trick!
Microsoft seems to have forgotten that they have shipped the stupid IE6 with their OS...
